NWRA in 2012: Back to our Roots
Sunday, February 5th, 2012Our Maps Page has just been revised.
In previous recent years, the Neighbors of Winner Road Association “claimed” an area consisting of approximately 250-300 homes. We have decided to reduce this to just 38 homes.
There are several reasons for doing this: The Independence Police’s City-Wide Neighborhood Watch Program officially recommends the Crime Watches grow to be only 25-30 homes in size. Such a small size should create a close-knit group. The Police believe that claiming “too big” an area can be discouraging to activists who are not aware of the claim… and want to start a Crime Watch for their block.
In addition, we found publishing and hand-delivering newsletters to 250 homes several times per year to be a difficult challenge. And our efforts to drum up support from those outlying areas weren’t very fruitful.
To come up with our new boundaries, we had to “return to our roots”: This organization was originally formed by Mark Kille as a Crime Watch. And his original map identified 36 homes that directly sat on Winner Road.
We have added an extra two houses on 13th Street that directly border Winner Road. This is because the two families there (who are related… the Schmidt family) have, historically, been quite involved in our group…and we didn’t want to leave them out.
We still hope to occasionally “bring the news” of the effectiveness of Crime Watches to surrounding areas / blocks! It would be very nice to see individual Crime Watches start up on their own over on Franklin Drive, Glenwood Ave., 14th Street, and 15th Street!
For those folks who live in one of the 38 homes!:
1) Please be sure you’re subscribed to one of our TWO email mailing lists:
a) news@winnerneighbors.org is the one we send out to the surrounding public, anybody who has even a passing interest in our Neighborhood You can subscribe to this email mailing list by going to our website (www.winnerneighbors.org) and filling out / submitting the info in the small subscription box on the lower left hand of any page on that site.
b) talk@winnerneighbors.org is specifically for internal group discussion for the 38 homes in our area. Since this is a more-private list, please submit your request to be subscribed to it by filling-out and submitting form found on our “Contact Us” page.
2) We have a tentative “first meeting of the year” date set for Thursday, March 1st, at my house (David Raasch, 9725 E. Winner Road). Hope to see you there!
